According the Italian newspaper "La Stampa" there are no doubts: Alex Zanardi is the athlete of the year 2012, and obviously I couldn't agree more.
After the excellent performances of the London paralympics games and the great human qualities he demonstrated to have during both his careers in the sports world (the first as a car racer and now as a handbiker), I think he could be nominated as athlete of the decade too.
Everyone knows his success of the last summer in London, but maybe you haven't seen this video from the Venice Marathon (October 28 2012) when he helped another racer:
